What is a Carbon Steel Pipe Cap?

A carbon steel pipe cap is a butt-welded fitting used to seal the end of a pipe system, stopping flow and containing pressure. It is typically manufactured from carbon steel plate or pipe, hot-formed into a dished or flat shape, and beveled for welding onto the pipe end. Carbon steel caps are the most widely used closure fitting in industrial piping due to their strength, cost-effectiveness, and versatility across oil, gas, water, steam, and general process applications.

Standards and Specifications

Carbon steel pipe caps are manufactured to ASME B16.9 for factory-made butt-welding fittings, and ASME B16.28 for shortened radius fittings. They also conform to MSS SP-75, ASTM A234 WPB, ASTM A105, and EN 10253 standards. Sizes range from 1/2 inch to 48 inches (DN15 to DN1200), with wall schedules from SCH 10 to SCH XXS. The dished end follows standard ellipsoidal or torispherical geometry for pressure loading.

Materials and Grades

The most common grade is ASTM A234 WPB, a carbon steel fitting grade suitable for moderate-temperature service. Other grades include A105 for forged applications, Q235B and Q345B for general engineering, and ASTM A420 WPL6 for low-temperature service down to minus 46 degrees Celsius. All material is fully traceable by heat number and supplied with mill test certificates.

Pressure and Temperature Ratings

Carbon steel caps are rated for temperatures from minus 29 degrees Celsius to 425 degrees Celsius, with pressure classes matching the pipe system: Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500. The wall thickness is calculated per ASME B31.3 pressure design formulas. Each cap is hydrostatically tested and dimensional verified before shipment.

Applications

Carbon steel pipe caps are used in oil and gas pipelines, refineries, petrochemical plants, water treatment, HVAC systems, power generation, shipbuilding, fire protection, and general industrial piping. They seal the ends of headers, branch lines, pump manifolds, heat exchangers, and equipment nozzles wherever a pipe end must be closed.

Advantages

Carbon steel caps offer high tensile strength, good impact resistance, and excellent weldability. They are cost-effective compared with alloy and stainless alternatives while maintaining reliable pressure performance. The butt-welded joint provides full structural continuity with the pipe, eliminating leak paths and allowing 100 percent radiographic inspection of the weld.

Installation Guidelines

Bevel the pipe end per standard dimensions, clean both surfaces, and align the cap concentrically. Tack weld in at least four positions, then complete the butt weld using GTAW or SMAW with matching filler metal. For thick-wall applications, preheat and interpass temperature control are recommended. After welding, inspect the weld visually and radiographically, and pressure test the system as required.

Quality Assurance

Each cap is marked with grade, heat number, size, wall thickness, and manufacturer's identification. Inspection includes dimensional checks, visual examination, hardness testing, and NDE when specified. Material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are provided. Caps are coated with rust-preventive oil and packaged in wooden cases or pallets for export.
