What is a Heavy Wall Tee?

A heavy wall tee is a thick-walled T-shaped branch fitting designed for high-pressure piping systems where standard wall thickness would be inadequate. With extra wall thickness at both the run and branch, it provides a larger safety margin for pressure containment and branch loading. Heavy wall tees are used in high-pressure oil and gas, power boiler piping, and hydraulic systems.

Standards and Specifications

Heavy wall tees are manufactured to ASME B16.9 and ASME B16.28, with wall thicknesses above STD up to XXS and custom calculated thicknesses. They conform to MSS SP-75 and ASTM A234. Available in equal and reducing patterns. Sizes range from NPS 1/2 to NPS 24, with wall thickness calculated per ASME B31.3 pressure design formulas.

Materials and Grades

Carbon steel A234 WPB and A105 are standard for high-pressure service. Stainless steel 304/304L and 316/316L provide corrosion resistance in pressure chemical systems. Alloy steel WP11, WP22, and WP91 grades handle high-temperature high-pressure power and refinery service. Material is sourced from certified mills with thick-wall seamless tube.

Pressure and Temperature Ratings

The extra wall thickness allows heavy wall tees to withstand pressures well above standard schedule ratings, often exceeding Class 900 and Class 1500 service. Temperature ratings depend on material: carbon steel to 425 degrees Celsius, alloy steel to 600 degrees Celsius. Each tee is normalized and hydrostatically tested at elevated pressure.

Applications

Heavy wall tees are used in high-pressure oil and gas gathering, deep-well injection piping, power plant boiler headers, hydraulic pressure systems, chemical high-pressure loops, and supercritical steam lines. They provide branch connections in thick-wall piping where standard tees cannot meet pressure design requirements.

Advantages

The increased wall thickness provides a larger safety margin for pressure containment, reduces stress concentration at the branch junction, and extends service life under cyclic pressure loading. Heavy wall tees resist fatigue from pressure fluctuations and water hammer. They eliminate the need for external reinforcement pads on critical branches.

Installation Guidelines

Heavy wall tees require wider groove bevel preparation due to the thick wall. Preheat is recommended for carbon steel thicknesses above 25 mm, and post-weld heat treatment is required for alloy grades. Use multi-pass welding with controlled interpass temperature and matching filler metal. Perform 100 percent radiographic examination of all three welds.

Quality Assurance

Each heavy wall tee is marked with size, grade, heat number, wall thickness, and manufacturer's stamp. Inspection includes ultrasonic thickness measurement, dimensional checks, hardness testing, NDE, and hydrostatic testing. Material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are provided. Tees are coated with rust-preventive oil and bevel ends are capped for shipping.
