DIN 2605 Elbow
What is a DIN 2605 Elbow?
A DIN 2605 elbow is a butt-welded pipe elbow manufactured to the German DIN 2605 standard, which specifies dimensions for steel pipe bends and elbows used in industrial piping. Available in 45-degree and 90-degree angles, long radius and short radius, it is widely specified in German-engineered plants, European projects, and regions that historically adopted German piping standards.
Standards and Dimensions
DIN 2605 covers dimensions for elbows from DN15 to DN1000. The long radius elbow has a center-to-end radius of 1.5 times the nominal diameter, while the short radius uses 1.0 times. Wall thickness follows DIN 2605 table specifications based on pressure rating and material. Bevel end preparation conforms to DIN 2605 end preparation dimensions for butt welding.
Materials and Grades
Common materials include carbon steel St37.0, St35.8, and St45.8 per DIN 1626 and DIN 17175. Alloy steel grades include 15Mo3, 13CrMo44, and 10CrMo910. Stainless steel grades include 1.4301, 1.4541, and 1.4571. Material is supplied with mill test certificates per DIN 50049 3.1B or 3.2B, the predecessor to EN 10204.
Pressure and Temperature Ratings
DIN 2605 elbows are rated according to DIN 2401 pressure tables and the AD 2000 code. Carbon steel elbows operate from minus 20 degrees Celsius to 450 degrees Celsius, alloy steel grades up to 550 degrees Celsius, and stainless steel from cryogenic to 800 degrees Celsius. Wall thickness is selected based on the design pressure and temperature per German piping codes.
Applications
DIN 2605 elbows are used in German and European industrial plants, chemical processing, power stations, refineries, shipbuilding, and district heating. They are common in projects in Germany, central Europe, China, and other regions that adopted German piping engineering standards, particularly in chemical and power plant construction.
Advantages
DIN 2605 elbows provide German-standard dimensional precision and interchangeability. The long radius design offers low flow resistance and good erosion performance. Material grades and testing requirements are well established under German engineering tradition. Full traceability and mill certificates meet AD 2000 and pressure equipment directive requirements.
Installation Guidelines
Prepare beveled ends per DIN 2605 end preparation. Align the elbow with the mating pipe, tack weld, and complete full-penetration welds using matching filler metal. Apply preheat and post-weld heat treatment as required for alloy and thick-wall materials. Welding procedure specifications should follow DIN 18800 or AD 2000 guidelines.
Quality Assurance
Each DIN 2605 elbow is marked with DN size, wall thickness, material grade, heat number, standard designation, and manufacturer's stamp. Inspection includes dimensional checks, wall thickness measurement, visual examination, and NDE when specified. Material test certificates per DIN 50049 3.1B or 3.2B are provided. Elbows are oiled and bevel ends are capped for shipping.
