EN 10253 Elbow
What is an EN 10253 Elbow?
An EN 10253 elbow is a butt-welded pipe elbow manufactured to the European standard EN 10253, which covers wrought butt-welded fittings for pressure purposes. Available in 45-degree and 90-degree angles, type A (standard) and type B (wall thickness strengthened), it is the dominant elbow specification in European, Middle Eastern, and international projects following EU piping codes.
Standards and Dimensions
EN 10253-1 covers general requirements, while EN 10253-2 through -4 cover carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel fittings respectively. Dimensions follow European nominal diameters DN15 to DN1200. Long radius elbows have a radius of 1.5 times the nominal diameter; short radius elbows use 1.0 times. Type B fittings have increased wall thickness at the curvature for higher pressure ratings.
Materials and Grades
Carbon steel grades include P235GH, P265GH, and 16Mo3 per EN 10253-2. Stainless steel grades include 1.4301 (304), 1.4401 (316), 1.4306 (304L), and 1.4404 (316L) per EN 10253-4. Alloy steel grades include 13CrMo4-5 and 10CrMo9-10. All material is fully traceable and supplied with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificates.
Pressure and Temperature Ratings
EN 10253 elbows are rated according to the pressure-temperature tables in EN 1092 and the piping code EN 13480. Type B elbows have higher pressure ratings due to the strengthened curvature. Carbon steel grades operate from minus 20 degrees Celsius to 450 degrees Celsius, alloy steel to 550 degrees Celsius, and stainless steel from cryogenic to 800 degrees Celsius.
Applications
EN 10253 elbows are used in European-standard refineries, petrochemical plants, power stations, chemical processing, offshore installations, HVAC, and district heating systems. They are specified on projects following EN 13480, AD 2000, and TRD codes, including EPC projects in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa that adopt European standards.
Advantages
EN 10253 elbows provide European-standard dimensional conformance and traceability. Type B construction offers a strengthened curvature for demanding pressure service. The material range covers carbon, alloy, and stainless steels with harmonized European grades. Full traceability and EN 10204 certification meet EU pressure equipment directive requirements.
Installation Guidelines
Prepare the beveled ends per EN 10253 end preparation dimensions. Align the elbow with the mating pipe, tack weld, and complete full-penetration welds using filler metal matching the base material. Apply preheat and post-weld heat treatment as required. For type B elbows, ensure the strengthened curvature faces the expected stress direction. Radiographic inspection verifies weld quality.
Quality Assurance
Each EN 10253 elbow is marked with DN size, wall thickness, material grade, heat number, type designation, standard number, and manufacturer's stamp. Inspection includes dimensional checks, wall thickness measurement, visual examination, PMI, and NDE when specified. Material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 are provided. Elbows are oiled and bevel ends are protected for export shipping.
